Title: Anti-fouling blend polyethersulfone with functionalized nanosilica membrane coated by nanosilver/polyvinyl alcohol layer

Anti-fouling membranes were prepared by blending PES with amino-functionalized nanosilica and coated with composite layer of nanosilver/polyvinylalcohol layer. The membranes were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transforms infrared (FTIR) spectrophotometer, contact angle, with membrane mechanical properties. The membranes performances were tested using synthetic solutions of whey simulating dairy wastewater as part of our selected goal of saving the environment. The results indicate that blending polyethersulfone with 1.5% amino-functionalized nano-silica provides a whey separation of 90% and permeate flux of 575 L/m2.h with a feed whey concentration of 0.8%. After coating the membrane surface by nanosilver/polyvinylalcohol layer, the permeate flux was found to decrease to 120 L/m2.h, while separation efficiency increases to reach 99% whey separation percentage. The fouling test indicates that coated membrane has antifouling behavior; moreover, it shows enhanced stability over operation hours for recorded parameters with decreased backwash rate.
